This is the simple solution for flying your personal flag/burgee. Proper flag etiquette calls for you to display your personal colors / yacht club burgee from your masthead.
With our pig stick design, you can easily hoist your burgee and proudly fly it properly. All you need is a small cheek block mounted at your masthead and enough line.
Our non-fouling design also allows your burgee to work as an apparent wind indicator while underway.
Our pig stick works well with the standard 12 inch (along the leading edge) flag and comes with enough waxed whipping twine to attach your burgee. You can substitute your own clips but we find that the twine works just fine.
The pig stick is made from a 48 inch poplar dowel, bronze wire and stainless harware, all non-corrosive. The wooden dowel is stained. If you like, you can add a coat or two of varnish but it is not necessary. My first one I made has flown from my last three catboats over 8 years and will continue to serve me well. My only recommendation is to hoist your pig stick before heading out and than dropping it and stowing it under your sail cover while in port. The pig stick will last a long time but your flag will be shot half way through the season if you leave it flying all the time.
To hoist, use halyard of your choice (as little stretch as possible) and take a clove hitch at the bottom and another about 15 inches up the pig stick, clip ends of halyard together (continuous loop), haul away. Our suggestions are only just that, as every sailor will have his or her own way of rigging their pig stick.
If you are not satisfied with your new Pig Stick / Burgee Staff, we will refund your purchase price within seven days but you are responsible for return shipping costs.
